We spent the next day together. We ran in the morning and watched movies during the day. I didn’t have the heart to tell Shane about his mom visiting me yet, but I thought that was a better conversation to have when we weren’t going out that night.
By the time late afternoon came around, we’d dressed in semiformal clothing.
“Why do we need the nice shirts again?” Shane asked from his spot in front of the mirror. He was delectable in black pants, shiny matching shoes, and a dark navy dress shirt that fit him in all the right places, including the arms he’d begun working on.
“Because this isn’t just any party. Anna’s one of the partners of the firm I work at. The other partners will be there too.” I’d chosen gray pants and a white button-up, a navy tie, and a dark blue jacket on top. It was elegant, but I didn’t look like I was trying too hard with a full-blown suit. I shifted up behind Shane and kissed the back of his neck, earning me a small moan.
“I don’t know why you still work there. They clearly don’t respect you enough. They send you home with too much work, and you’re always complaining about how they barely pay you. They give you the freebies.”
“They aren’t all exactly freebies.” I winced. “They just don’t charge criminals as much for me.”
“I don’t get why, though. What’s the point?” Shane turned in my arms to look at me and frowned. “Aren’t people without money supposed to get free help? I did.”
“Because they want to look good. Advertising, of sorts.” I shrugged. “Brickton, Harper, and Leroy aren’t all about money.” I snorted out a laugh. “Except, that they are.”
“But it’s always you who takes on those cases.” He slid his hands over my shoulders and around my neck, shuffling closer so he could lean up and kiss me on the lips. “You deserve better.”
“Maybe.” I grabbed his ass and squeezed those soft globes I wanted to bite into. “But let’s not talk about it right now. We can’t be late.” I forced myself to take a step back and smiled at him. “You make me want to put you on your knees while you’re dressed like that.”
His cheeks pinked up and he ducked his head.
Guilt curled inside me, reminding me that he was only eighteen and my dead partner’s younger brother, but I shoved it away. This arrangement wasn’t permanent, just some fun until he felt better.
“Maybe you should do naughty things to me, Daddy.” My sweet boy’s lips twisted into a wicked smile.
“I’ll think about it, after the party. I just need to get through this.”
He pouted. “Fine.”
Laughing, I placed my hand on Shane’s lower back and led him down the hallway and out of the house, making sure to lock the front door. The cool air brushed against my face until I got into the warmth of the car. Even though it was the end of May, the night wind still held a touch of coldness and broke the heat of the day.
